Serial Casting 101

Today begins our adventure in serial casting.  Serial casting is a series of casts used to slowly stretch out the muscles and heel chord that have grown tighter due to Cam's past spasticity. He will wear the cast for a week and it will be set at a certain angle. Then he will get it taken off and the angle will be slightly greater for the following week and so on...He will more than likely need 3-4 casts total. Cam did amazingly well today. He watched a movie the whole time and didn't put up a fuss once. He had 3 extra observers watching as well because this is a "newer" procedure in the Boise area and they wanted to learn from him. We have begun calling him "The Pioneer"!

Measuring to find the right angle to fit him with and to see if he his range had improved from last week...we are thrilled to say there was IMPROVEMENT from last week (I can't remember by how many degrees, but it was significant)!  Our stretches and P.T. 4 times a week is paying off!

Placing the sock on for protection.

Wrapping with gauze.

Lots of gauze!  We don't want any blisters...

Beginning to wrap the casting material.

No big deal.

Adding a lift in the heel so he can walk flat footed.

Added a boot for walking and week one....DONE!

Way to go Cam! You are so brave! We shall pray that the Lord will give you an extra measure of patience and continued happy spirit like you demonstrated while getting casted. Hope we see you soon!
